Honda recalls 81,000 Accord sedans over air bag warning light

Honda Motor Co. is recalling 81,000 of its 2004-2005 Accord sedans because of issues that could cause an air bag-related sensor to fail, the company said Wednesday.

Honda said in a Jan. 9 letter to the government that the wiring harness for the seat position sensor, which detects the driver's seating position and adjusts the air bag inflation pressure accordingly, was attached in the wrong location and may have been overtightened.

Honda said the sensor wire could break and cause the air bag warning light to be illuminated and prevent the sensor from working properly. When the sensor fails, the air bag system automatically moves to full inflation pressure, which could increase the risk of injury for smaller drivers in a frontal crash, the Japanese automaker said.

Honda spokesman Chris Naughton said the company was not aware of any injuries or incidents connected to the recall.

The recall is expected to begin in early February, and dealers will replace the seat position sensor wiring subharness, Honda said.

Toyota and Nissan issue safety recalls over mats and gas tubes

Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it is recalling optional ``all-weather'' floor mats in 55,000 Lexus ES 350 and Toyota Camry passenger cars because the mat could interfere with the gas pedal and lead to a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a consumer advisory about the heavy-duty rubber floor mats, noting that if unsecured, the map could move forward and trap the gas pedal, causing the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably.

In a separate move, Nissan Motor Co. said it was recalling nearly 420,000 sport utility vehicles because of possible corrosion in the tube where motorists pump gasoline.

The recall involves Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX4 SUVs from the 1997-2001 model years. More than 370,000 of the vehicles under recall were originally sold or are currently registered in 22 ``cold weather'' U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Another 45,000 vehicles are in Canada.

In the Toyota recall, NHTSA urged drivers of other vehicles, including the Avalon and Prius, to check the driver-side floor mats to ensure they were properly installed. NHTSA spokesman Rae Tyson said it was taking the step ``because we believe potentially it is a very serious safety issue.''

Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong said the automaker had not received any complaints about the Avalon and Prius. In some cases, he said the floor mats _ used to collect rain water, mud and snow _ were stacked on top of the original carpet mats and wedged up against the accelerator.

The vehicle has hooks on the floor that can only secure one mat at a time.

Toyota has received 22 complaints and learned of six accidents allegedly connected to the issue. Kwong said they did not know of any injuries linked to the mats.

The Japanese-based automaker plans to notify owners in early October and expects replacement mats to be available at dealerships by late November.

In a statement, Toyota advised owners to regularly check that their floor mat is properly secured and said ``under no circumstances should more than one floor mat ever be used in the driver's seating position.''

Nissan said its recall was prompted by an inadequate amount of coating on a bracket by the fuel filler tube assembly. In regions that use road salt during the winter, a mixture of snow, water and salt could cause corrosion on the bare metal part of the tube and allow fuel to leak.

Nissan spokesman Fred Standish said there were no reports of fires or injuries.

The states covered by the recall include: Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Nissan dealers will replace the fuel filler tube assembly with a new one with an improved coating process. Owners will be notified beginning in late November. For more information, owners can contact Nissan at (800) 647-7261.

Ford owned Volvo Cars recalls 58,000 cars; one flaw could cause fire

Automobile maker Volvo Cars is recalling 56,000 vehicles because of two separate problems.

Volvo Cars spokeswoman Maria Bohlin said 38,000 diesel cars of the S60, V 70 XC 70 and XC 90 models made in 2006 were being called back in Europe due to a material fault that could cause the motor catching fire.

The second callback, involving 18,000 of the company's latest V 70 and XC 70 models, relates to an air bag problem in the side of the car.

The cars have mainly been sold in Sweden, Britain and in the U.S.

It was not immediately clear how many fire incidents there had been.

Bohlin said the fuel injector plants or bolts, on top of the motor cylinder, were faulty, potentially causing diesel to leak out into the motor.

Injector plants or bolts will be replaced free of charge in a procedure that would take about two hours, she said.

With the air bags ``there's a risk they don't launch fast enough,'' Bohlin said.

Bohlin declined to say how much the recalls and maintenance work would cost the company.

Volvo Cars has been owned by Ford Motor Co. since 1999, when it was acquired for US$6.45 billion (4.4 billion euros).

Toyota recalls Lexus and other luxury car models for faulty pipes

Toyota began recalling 264,000 luxury passenger vehicles over faulty fuel pipes Thursday, including flagship Lexus cars sold in Canada and other overseas countries, the company said.

Included in the recall are Lexus models produced in Japan in 2005 and sold overseas, and Lexus, Mark X, and Crown models sold in Japan, according to Toyota Motor Corp. spokeswoman Yoshie Matsuura.

Faulty fuel pipe design on the recalled models could cause cracks and corrosion and lead to a fuel leak, according to a notice filed with the Transport Ministry.

The Lexus GS300, Lexus IS250, and Lexus IS350 vehicles are being recalled in Canada, the United States, England and Germany, Matsuura said.

There have been 39 cases of trouble within Japan but no reports of injuries, according to the Transport Ministry. It was not immediately clear whether any problems have been reported elsewhere.

The Japanese automaker has been hit with quality control problems in recent years, as it ramps up production to meet booming demand. Toyota has promised to beef up quality checks.

Ford recalling 1.1 million trucks and SUVs over possible engine stall

Ford Motor Co. is recalling 1.17 million trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans to fix an engine sensor that could lead to engine stalling.

The recalled vehicles are all from the 1997-2003 model years with 7.3-litre diesel engines, including the Ford E-Series van, Excursion full-size sport utility vehicle, and F-450 Super Duty and F-550 Super Duty trucks.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a posting on its website that the camshaft position sensor on the engine could function intermittently and lead to an engine stall and potential crash.

The sensor is an electrical component that helps regulate the fuel going into the engine.

Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis said there have been 14 accidents associated with the problem, but no injuries reported.

In the event of an engine stall, Jarvis said drivers traveling at speeds greater than 30 miles per hour would have full power steering and power braking, allowing them to pull over to the side of the road.

At speeds below 50 kilometres an hour, the motorists would still have braking and steering functions, he said.

Dealers will inspect the sensor and replace it with a new one free of charge. The recall is expected to begin around Dec. 17, with mailing of notification letters to be completed in phases by May 2008.

Swedish truck maker Volvo AB recalls 125,000 trucks in North America

Swedish truck-and-bus maker Volvo AB said today it would recall 125,000 trucks in North America because of a fire hazard.

Tommy Kohle, a spokesman for the Goteborg-based company, said it would recall the Volvo VN, Volvo VHD and Volvo VT models constructed from 2003 to the present.

The trucks have been sold in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Kohle says there's a problem in the main switch in the lighting system which can lead to an overheating in the component.

The company has received reports about the problem, Kohle said, but it was not clear whether it had resulted in any serious incidents.

Kohle said Volvo would fix the problem free of charge.

Volvo has more than 80,000 employees worldwide. It sold its car division to U.S.-based Ford Motor Co. in 1999.

Honda Begins Sales of All-New CITY in Thailand

The design of the new CITY is based on the total pursuit of a compact, yet dynamic form with road presence. Toyota Begins Testing Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles in UK

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces that together with EDF Energy, the British subsidiary of the French energy company EDF, it began testing TMC-produced plug-in hybrid vehicles on public roads in the United Kingdom on September 10.

To officially kick off the tests, TMC and EDF held a joint press conference in Hyde Park, London, on the same day, which was attended by, among others, UK Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform John Hutton, other members of the UK Parliament, London municipal government officials and the Japanese Ambassador to the United Kingdom Shin Ebihara. EDF Energy Chief Executive Vincent de Rivaz, TMC Managing Officer Koei Saga, Toyota Motor Europe Senior Vice President Graham Smith and others were also present.

At the press conference, TMC's Saga, who is in charge of hybrid system development, said, "We are very excited to expand our PHV road testing program to the UK in collaboration with EDF Energy. Today's announcement represents a step-change towards acceptance of electricity in combination with hybrid technology as a viable and sustainable transport solution."

The UK road tests, like those conducted with EDF in France starting in autumn 2007, involve setting up necessary infrastructure, evaluating vehicle performance and ease-of-use, and surveying participating vehicle users. Plans call for the test period to continue for more than one year.

The UK is the fifth country in which TMC has conducted tests of plug-in hybrid vehicles on public roads, following tests that began in 2007 in Japan, the United States, France and Belgium.

While the current tests involve use of vehicles equipped with nickel-metal hydride batteries, TMC is also accelerating development of plug-in hybrid vehicles equipped with lithium-ion batteries. Sales of the latter to fleet customers in Japan, the United States and Europe are planned to begin—ahead of the original schedule—by the end of 2009.

TMC intends to continue meeting the challenge of achieving sustainable mobility that aims to create harmony among cars, people and the environment, and, to this end, positions its hybrid technology, including its plug-in hybrid vehicles, at the core of its environmental technologies.

Auburn Hills, Mich., Aug 22, 2008 - Chrysler LLC's Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) began rolling off the assembly line this week at its Newark (Delaware) Assembly Plant. Chrysler is offering the two-mode hybrid powertrain on both vehicles built at the plant, Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen.

In order to smoothly add one of the automotive industry's most advanced technologies into their established build process, cross-functional launch teams conducted highly accurate, cost-effective computer simulation of new assembly processes. Similar efforts were conducted at tooling suppliers.

"The implementation of this new manufacturing process was done intelligently, with both quality and cost in mind." said Joe Ozdowy, Plant Manager of Newark Assembly. "I'd like to congratulate and thank the team for their dedication while bringing these important new products to market to help satisfy the changing needs of our Dodge and Chrysler customers."

The production of early pilot vehicles was done on the plant's assembly line which helped to root out anomalies early in the pre-production process, helping to ensure a higher quality launch.

Production of vehicles with the hybrid powertrain differs in several ways from production of those with conventional powertrains. New processes were implemented to accommodate HEV production, including a unique powertrain assembly process, and ergonomic-assist systems to aid in new functions, such as HEV battery installation.

There are several unique components associated with HEV production that are installed at the plant, including:

  • 300-volt battery

  • Two-mode transmission

  • Torque power inverter module (TPIM)

  • Electric air conditioning

  • Auxiliary power module

  • High-voltage cables (AC and DC)

  • Hydro-electric power steering pump

  • Hybrid gate way module

  • Cooling module

Dodge Durango was the leader in its segment for initial quality, according to J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Initial Quality StudySM. With the advent of HEV production, a new series of error-proofing processes was put in place to ensure continued quality excellence.

The Advanced Two-mode Hybrid System

Chrysler's LLC's advanced, state-of-the-art two-mode full hybrid system – developed in partnership with General Motors, Daimler and The BMW Group – integrates proven automatic-transmission technology with a patented hybrid-electric drive system to deliver the world's first two-mode full hybrid.

As a result of low- and high-speed electrically variable transmission (EVT) modes, the system is defined as a "two-mode hybrid." In addition, the sophisticated fuel-saving system incorporates four fixed-gear ratios for high efficiency and power-handling capabilities. During the two EVT modes, the system can use the electric motors to improve fuel economy, acceleration, and for regenerative braking to utilize energy that would normally be lost during braking or deceleration. The energy is stored in the batteries for later use.

The system's two modes are optimized for city and highway driving.

In the first mode – at low speed and with light loads – the vehicle can operate in three ways:

  • Electric power only

  • Engine power only

  • Any combination of engine and electric power

The two-mode hybrid provides all of the fuel-saving benefits of a full-hybrid system, including electric-only operation. In this mode, the engine is "shut off," with the vehicle moving under electric-only power at low speed. The result is a significant reduction in fuel consumption in heavy stop-and-go traffic.

The second mode is used primarily at highway speeds. In addition to electric assist, the second mode provides full power from engine when conditions demand it, such as when passing, pulling a trailer or climbing a steep grade.

Pricing for the full-size 4x4 sport-utility hybrid electric vehicles is nearly $8,000 below the competition. The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the new 2009 Dodge Durango HEMI® Hybrid is $45,340, including $800 for destination. The MSRP for the new 2009 Chrysler Aspen HEMI Hybrid is $45,570, including $800 for destination. Additionally, customers are expected to receive an estimated tax credit of $1,800.

Jeep Patriot is Least Expensive Sport Utility Vehicle to Own

Despite high gas prices and general economic uncertainty, many consumers are still in need of sport utility vehicles and are looking for the best values in the marketplace. A study by Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, reveals that the Jeep Patriot is the least expensive sport utility vehicle to own. The results are based on Edmunds.com's True Cost to Own℠ data, which incorporates projected model-specific average vehicle ownership costs, consisting of depreciation, financing, taxes, fees, insurance premiums, fuel costs, maintenance and repairs. Edmunds.com's True Cost to Own℠ data accounts for total vehicle costs over a five-year period.

"Even though gas prices are high, some consumers are still in search of a sport utility vehicle to meet their needs,"said Jesse Toprak, Executive Director of Industry Analysis, Edmunds.com. "For those consumers, vehicles like the Jeep Patriot and Nissan Rogue are relative bargains in their segments."

The following True Cost to Own℠ data is based on a price of $4.09 per gallon for regular gasoline (the national average on July 15):

Nissan Releases New Clean Diesel X-TRAIL 20GT

Mazda Kiyora Concept to Make its Global Debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show

Mazda Kiyora, a lightweight, next generation, urban compact concept car, will be revealed at the 2008 Paris International Motor Show to be held from Thursday, October 2 through Sunday, October 19, 2008.

Mazda Kiyora (meaning ‘clean and pure’ in Japanese) represents the harmony between driving pleasure and environmental and safety features aspired to in Mazda’s long-term technology development vision, “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom.”

The concept of “Kiyora” helped the designers to imagine a city car cutting cleanly through an urban landscape, with water as the design theme. Mitsubishi Lineup at Paris Motor Show

Today the new Lancer Sportback saw its world debut at Le Mondial de l'Automobile 2008 (Paris Motor Show 2008), held in Halls 1-8 of the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles from October 2 (October 4 for the general public) through October 19. Joining the Lancer Sportback on the Mitsubishi Motors stand for its first viewing is the facelifted made-in- Europe Colt compact model, built at Mitsubishi Motors NedCar Factory in Borne, The Netherlands.

Debuting alongside the new Lancer Sportback and Colt models is Mitsubishi Motors' new Racing Lancer turbodiesel competition car. The company will enter the car in the next Dakar Rally, which moves from the African to the South American continent for 2009. Also starring in the 15 model lineup (16 during Public Days) is the i MiEV new-generation electric vehicle, currently undergoing proving testing in Japan, with exploratory plans scheduled or under consideration in the United States, New Zealand and Iceland.

1. Exhibit highlights
(1) Lancer Sportback
The Lancer Sportback is a 5-door sport hatchback, and is distinguished by the Mitsubishi Motors signature inverted-slant nose and trapezoidal "jet fighter" grille. Spearheading the new model lineup is the Lancer Sportback Ralliart, a sport-driving oriented 4WD version powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine mated to Mitsubishi Motors' Twin Clutch SST high-efficiency automated manual transmission.

(2) Colt (European market model)
Mitsubishi Motors launched the Colt series in Europe in 2004, and since that time it has sold some 270,000 models. The series includes many variants including the 5-door Colt, 3-door Colt CZ3, turbocharged 3-door Colt CZT and soft-top Colt CZC.
Major changes to the new European Colt unveiled at the Paris Motor Show include the Mitsubishi Motors signature inverted-slant nose and trapezoidal "jet fighter" grille also used on the Lancer series. The 5-door body models also feature a restyled rear end and are joined by a new turbocharged trim level. A new Colt Ralliart trim level is offered in both 5-door and 3-door versions.
The new Colt series also reflects Mitsubishi Motors' strong commitment to the environment. The low-CO2 Colt Clear Tec model is powered by a 1.1- or 1.3-liter engine which incorporates the company's AS&G (auto stop-&-go) idling stop system. In addition, the 1.3-liter Colt Clear Tec FFV caters to growing demand for flexible-fuel vehicles.>

(3) Racing Lancer
The Racing Lancer uses a new multi-tubular steel frame. Special efforts have been made to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity, for example by positioning the fuel tank closer to the ground. The spare tires have been relocated to reduce moment of inertia and improve handling. The 3-liter V6 diesel engine features a two-stage turbocharger that delivers boost across the full speed range and sees the unit produce maximum power of at least 280PS (206kW) and peak torque of 66.3kgfm (650Nm). Racing Lancer's permanent four-wheel driveline features a self-locking center differential. Suspension at front and rear double wishbone/coil spring-based system.
Mitsubishi Motors has competed in 25 consecutive Dakar Rallies since 1983 and continues to recognize that the event provides the ultimate proving ground for engine and 4WD technologies. The company will continue to compete in this rally and to feed back the results and knowhow gained into the development of new-generation clean diesel engines and of 4WD systems.

(4) The zero-emissions i MiEV electric vehicle
As one of the company's initiatives for reducing global warming and dependence on fossil fuels, MMC plans to bring the i MiEV electric vehicle to market in Japan in 2009.
i MiEV utilizes a large-capacity lithium-ion battery system and a compact, high-output electric motor in place of the traditional gasoline powertrain.
MMC is currently working with several electric power companies in Japan in conducting i MiEV fleet testing programs with a view to making EV technology commercially viable and electric vehicles a common sight on roads as soon as possible. MMC is also conducting market research and test programs in several countries outside Japan designed to test the viability of the technology in a variety of markets. In Europe, MMC and the government of Iceland are in discussions to start fleet testing sometime in fiscal 2009. In North America, Mitsubishi Motors and two power companies, one in California, plan to start fleet testing during the current fiscal year. And in New Zealand the company is to work with state-owned electric power company Meridian Energy in a promotional tour next year directed at gauging local interest in the vehicle.

All the DNA of rally racing: the Cayenne S Transsyberia

The Cayenne S Transsyberia likewise making its first appearance in Paris also bears reference to Porsche's outstanding success in motorsport. Like the robust Cayenne rally models entered in the Transsyberia Rally from Moscow to the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator, the road-going version is also based on the Cayenne S with its 4.8-litre V8 naturally-aspirated power unit featuring Porsche's fuel-efficient Direct Fuel Injection. The engine beneath the lid is however the even more dynamic power plant carried over from the Cayenne GTS, developing maximum output of 405 bhp (298 kW) at 6500 rpm and peak torque of 500 Newton-metres (Nm) (369 lb-ft) at 3500 revs.

2010 Fisker Karma


Like just about everything with a Fisker badge on it, this sedan is breathtaking to look at. But, surprisingly, there's much more to the story. This sedan, called the Karma, is a plug-in hybrid that Henrik Fisker claims can travel up to 100 miles on a single gallon of gas.

Moreover, using a hybrid module - called Q-drive and co-developed with Quantum Technologies - it can travel up to 50 miles on battery power alone. Combined with its four-cylinder gasoline engine, the big sedan can cover about 620 miles on a tank. Fisker claims a 0-to-60-mph time of 5.8 seconds and a sustained top speed of 125 mph. The Karma offers two driving modes; Stealth mode prioritizes electric operation for maximum economy while sport mode puts the performance of the Karma closer in line with the way the sedan looks. Fisker was very proud of the fact that the Karma also sounds fantastic, "a mix of an F1 car and a jet plane."

Under the beautiful skin is an all-new platform that allows the battery pack to be positioned at the center of the vehicle. This should improve handling by keeping the weight from hanging off of either end. Fisker says deliveries of the $80,000 sedan will begin in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Fisker to build Karma Hybrid Sedan in Finland


What do you do with an empty Porsche assembly line? If you're Finnish supplier Valmet Automotive, you offer to build the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sedan in your own factory.

On July 15, Fisker Automotive proclaimed Valmet as the official engineering and manufacturing contractor for the Karma program. Not only will Valmet help ready the slinky conceptual design for production, but it may build the hybrid itself.

As a production engineering firm, Valmet has often lent major automakers a hand in assembling cars over the past forty years. The firm was involved in producing many vintage Saabs, but is perhaps best known for its work on the Porsche Boxster. The roadster has been manufactured at Valmet's factory in Uusikaupunki, Finland, since 1997.

Porsche's recent decision to shift Boxster production to Austrian contractor Steyr leaves Valmet's factory open to assemble the Karma. Fisker hopes to produce up to 15,000 cars each year, while Valmet's facility can handle nearly six times that figure.

A final contract between Fisker and Valmet will be signed within months, while production of the Karma is expected to begin in late 2009.

2010 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid Spied


Though supplier issues threaten to delay the official launch, Mercedes-Benz continues to develop and test the 2010 ML450 Hybrid - its first SUV with hybrid powertrain.

Thanks to the partnership inked in 2005, the ML450 Hybrid, like the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrids, will also use a form of GM's 2-Mode hybrid transmission. In base form, the ML450 Hybrid will use a 3.5-liter V-6, although our sources suggest a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 could be offered - at least in Europe. As neat as that idea sounds, we think the gas version will be plenty efficient: Mercedes says the ML450 Hybrid delivers an impressive 30.5 mpg combined.

Should Mercedes find a supplier able to produce batteries in a timely fashion, the ML450 Hybrid could arrive at dealers as early as the fall of 2009.

2011 Chevy Volt Revealed


After months of speculation, skeptical claims of vaporware, and leaked photography, GM pulled the wraps off the 2011 Chevrolet Volt - its great green hope - at its centennial celebrations in Detroit.

It's easy to see this isn't the concept Volt, which debuted at the 2007 Detroit auto show. Engineers needed to improve aerodynamics for production, which explains why the flat, sharp surfaces of the show car transformed into long, rounded forms on the final product.

Though it may look somewhat different than the slinky concept shown at the 2007 Detroit auto show, the premise behind the Volt is still the same. Deemed an "extended-range electric vehicle", the car is designed to operate as an electric vehicle until the batteries are depleted. At that point, a small gasoline engine kicks in to recharge the batteries - not drive the wheels. Owners will also be able to recharge the Volt by plugging it into either a 120- or 240 volt outlet when parked at home or at work.

Electric propulsion comes courtesy of a 150-hp motor, primarily sourcing its power from a T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack which runs the length of the car. GM says the Volt will travel up to forty miles in EV mode, before turning to the gas engine. We've not yet seen official specs on that "generator," but previous reports suggest it's a 1.4-liter I-4 which burns gasoline or E85.

Unlike GM's previous electric car, the EV1, the Volt's chassis isn't entirely unique. Like the 2010 Chevrolet Cruze and the forthcoming Saturn Astra, the Volt makes use of GM's next-generation Delta platform. Though much of the car is unique, sharing some bits - like the McPherson strut front suspension - allows GM to reduce development and production costs.

Designers did try to differentiate the Volt from its siblings inside, carrying over some of the high-tech look from the concept. The main instrument cluster is customizable, while the center console, trimmed with a white finish and fitted with touch-sensitive controls, is reminiscent of an iPod. Bluetooth connectivity for both phones and audio devices is standard, while a navigation system is optional.

Still uncertain are the Volt's production timing and pricing. Last we heard, GM hopes to build the Volt in Hamtramck, Michigan, and should reach dealers with a sticker price of approximately $30,000 to $40,000.

2009 Pininfarina B0 Electric Vehicle


Just before his untimely death, Pininfarina CEO Andrea Pininfarina was reportedly hard at work in finalizing his company's first production electric vehicle. Dedicated in his honor, that car - the 2009 Pininfarina B0 - was publically unveiled at this week's Paris motor show.

Built in partnership with French battery firm Bollare, the B0 may look vaguely familiar. In fact, much of its exterior styling is borrowed from the Nara, an EV concept Pininfarina showed at the 2004 Paris show.

In the transition from concept to reality, some changes occured. Though designers saw fit to add two more doors - granting the hatchback a maximum capacity of four - perhaps the most noticeable feature of the production-intent B0 are its solar cells. Placed not only across the city car's entire roof but also its front fascia, the cells actually serve to recharge the car's battery pack.

That pack comes courtesy of Bollare, which has toiled away on its own battery design for the past fifteen years. Like most other contemporary EV batteries, Bollore's are lithium-ion cells, but are constructed in a different manner. Rather than sandwiching thick conductors and electrolyte, Bollare's battery uses thin films, allowing a smaller battery. Despite the battery's size, Pininfarina says the B0 has a range of approximately 153 miles, a recharge time of only a few hours, and a top-end of 80 mph.

Pininfarina excitedly insists the B0 is a production-ready vehicle, not a concept - plans to put the EV into limited production by the fall of 2009 seem to indicate they're serious. Though we've not heard official pricing, early reports suggested the B0 should cost approximately $23,000 - though that figure doesn't include the cost of leasing the lithium-ion battery packs.

Build Your Own Electric Vehicle By The Book


After President Eisenhower launched the space race in the late 1950s, there was a national sentiment that capable, average Americans could home-build just about anything. All men needed were good instructions and the right tools. Companies like Zenith, Heathkit, and the Radio Shack franchise offered solder-wielding hobbyists build-it-yourself kits for radios, TVs, alarm systems, etc. These, of course, would be necessary fitments for Cold War era bomb shelters.

While the Cold War is relegated to revisionist history books, the do-it-yourself crowd has switched gears and is now focusing on the green movement. You can buy books on brewing your own bio diesel, composting, and converting your home to solar power.

The most recent (and relevant) of these books to cross the editor's desk at AutomobileMag.com is titled BUILD YOUR OWN ELECTRIC VEHICLE. The book was released earlier this month, and yes, the title is in all caps ... presumably the books authors are very excited about what's between the covers.

This second edition, augmented with numerous additions and updates from its 1993 first run, is published by McGraw Hill. Seth Leitman and Bob Brant authored the 329-page paperback. Leitman's background is in electricity; he once worked for the New York State Power Authority and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. He now owns the ETS Energy Store, a company that sells organic, natural, and sustainable products. Co-author Bob Brant wrote the first-edition himself, drawing on his involvement with NASA on several major projects including the electrically-powered Lunar Rover.

One cannot doubt the sincerity of the authors or question their desire to help move drivers toward (what the authors believe to be) a superior species of transportation. The book's pages are filled with presumably well-researched and accurate charts, diagrams, and equations. Need to know the torque requirements for a 1987 Ford Ranger at different speeds an inclines? Well, you do if you're going to convert one to electric power ... and it's on page 123. A diagram on page 218 simplifies the entire wiring diagram for an EV. Sources for power controllers, battery systems, instrumentation, and the dozens of other components you'll need to convert a carbon-swilling gas guzzler to a Blue Bird friendly electric vehicle fill the book's final pages. (Somebody hand me some wire cutters 'cause I'm ready to get started.)

The reality of BUILD YOUR OWN ELECTRIC VEHICLE is that for readers with engineering degrees and good fabrication skills, this book provides pages of beneficial information that could lead to a project vehicle. For less skilled individuals, the premise of the book is utterly ridiculous. Most people can't swap out the light fixture in their bathroom. But perhaps worse than encouraging novices to play with electricity, the book promulgates the myth that practical and safe electric cars are simple and affordable. They're not. Just ask GM, Toyota, Ford, or Mercedes-Benz.
